Rubidium hydroxide (RbOH), a strong alkali, stronger than potassium hydroxide. It consists of rubidium ions and hydroxide ions in the ratio of 1:1. Rubidium hydroxide is highly corrosive, so appropriate protective clothing, gloves, and safety glasses should be worn when used.

Physical and chemical properties

Rubidium hydroxide is a kind of strong alkalii, which is more alkaline than potassium hydroxide. It is a white solid, easy to be deliqusce, and has alkali property. It can react with CO2 in the air to form rubidium carbonate.

Use

Rubidium hydroxide is rarely used in industrial production. It is generally used in the production of rubidium metal and all kinds of rubidium salt raw materials, catalyst production, micro high energy batteries, raw materials containing rubidium single crystal, special glass and ceramics industry and other fields. Because it is expensive and the main use can be replaced by potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, the latter is both mild reaction and safe to operate.

The preparation of Rubidium oxide dissolves in water to form rubidium hydroxide

Equation: Rb2O+H2O=2RbOH

Rubidium sulfate and barium hydroxide react to form barium sulfate precipitation and rubidium hydroxide

Equation: Rb2SO4+Ba(OH)2=2RbOH+BaSO4

Security

Rubidium hydroxide is highly corrosive and burns in contact, so it must be handled with caution and appropriate protective clothing should be worn when used.

In the laboratory, protective clothing, gloves, and eye-face protection must be made of alkali-resistant materials to prevent rubidium hydroxide from eroding the skin through leakage during experiments.

A small amount of hydroxide must be carefully added to the water in the beaker in order to dilute rubidium hydroxide. In addition, care must be taken in handling the compound in chemical experiments, since the process is exothermic and large amounts of heat should be released to avoid boiling the solution or damaging the reaction apparatus.
